Unknown Machette / Sword Brass Handle, HELP

I bought this in a grouping, any idea what it is? The handle is regimentall marked, I'm thinking 1880's french? I'm not sure if the scabbard is original to it or not, but fits it very good. The scabbard is marked made in costa rica. I know the piece is original. Any help would be great,

If I am not mistaken you are correct it it Third Empire Artillery NCO sword.

Was made heavy like that to cut trees and bush to clear shot for the gun.

Would agree also the scabbard has nothing to do with the blade.
