I have an imperial russian senior officer's papakha (fur cap) introduced in 1910. My question is this; is the braiding across the top and around the crown for a general or for a hussar? I know a soviet general would have a similar braid, but much thinner. Thanks for looking.

Questions on imperial russian fur cap

There were 3 classes of officers in the Russian Imperial Army (like in any other army):
- junior officers (ensign to captain);
- chief officers (lt. colonel and colonel);
- generals and marschals.
And there were 3 different patterns of braid for finishing officers' fur hats of each of these classes. I suppose you were confused that your fur hat is finished with a braid with VVVVVVV-pattern, which is commonly known as a hussars braid. In practice, it means only that the owner of this hat was chief officer (lieutenant-colonel or colonel).
Note that I'm talking only about the fur hat. This braid however was used for finishing many different officers items. I suggest you, if you have any questions about the Russian Imperial army, to ask them through this forum:
