This a road, sabotaged by the Vietminh to make the road unpassable for the french vehicles (this way of sabotage was called touches de piano). The legionnaires/workers are filling the gaps again.Not 100% sure what is going on here? Digging in with defences?

As a newbie on the forum, I've just discovered this thread this morning.
Please find here my little contribution.
The first one is a 3rd RPC parachutist during the operation "Béchar II" in Algeria, november 1957.
He wears an "all branches" TTA 47 set with the "allégé" type jacket (without hip pockets). Trousers 've been reseized and re cut as usual. Armed with a MAS 36/51 (deactivated), he is the rifle grenade launcher of his squad. You can notice the plastic pad on the stock and the AP grenade Mle 34 (deactivated) on the rifle barrel. The gear is the airborne webbing equipment, TAP 50 with the TAP50/53 pistol belt. The bergen is the all branches, Bergam TTA Mle 50. A WWII american GP bag filled with rifle greandes is hook on the the top of the bergen .
Symbol of elite and airborne status, the beloved US M3 combat knive is proudly worn. On his left chest the commando first aid kit has been attached to the suspenders.
Official issue "Pataugas" shoes are worn with the lightweight socks rolled on the top.

The second display is a metropolitan paratrooper, squad leader of the 14th RCP in 1958. This NCO reveived an airborne TAP47/53 camo set. An elastic belt had been added to the jacket but the beaver tail is still present. He is armed with the french SMG MAT 49 (deactivated). Magazines are carried in the TAP 50 pouches. The blue beret is an early three parts model. The small backpack is the airborne Mle 50/51. A winter paded underjacket is roll under the flap. The camo scarf is a french made net, close copy of the british model.

i really like the metropolitan para. I recall reading a description once of Algeria era paratroops ( in particular the camo worn and the cut of the garments) and they were described as having a "menacing elegance".
Which i thnk is very apt.

His live-in girlfriend gave me this, particular, image, after his demise.
One légionnaire is sporting a Sten SMG, other ones the Mousqueton Berthier.
IMO, a, really, funny image !
