              Hi Robert,

it is an old bayonet from Chile, presumably based on a French bayonet.

              See the coat of arms:

              Regards
              Uwe

                  Robert,

Since this bayonet does not appear to have a slot on it for attachemnt to a rifle it would probably be a private purchase piece to wear with the walking out uniform. If it was a piece produced by a French arsenal it would probably have the arsenals name written on the flat top of the blade. Being a private purchase piece there would not be an arsenal name there but possibly something else engraved on it? Are there any makers marks on the ricasso (in case you are not familiar with bayonet terms, this is the part of the blade just below the handle). Lots of private purchase pieces were marked by the maker and or the manufacturer (sometimes both) and that is usually where these marks would appear.

                  Regards,

                  Gordon

This appears in Le Nouvel Atlas de la Baionette de Collection by Jean-Pierre Vial

It is identified as a Chilean Police sidearm from around 1908.

Made in Germany using blades from surplus French Model 1874 Gras bayonets.
