What a great thead! Full of information. Thanks gents!

The only problem that I have, which I refuse to admit to these friends, is that I cannot imagine ever parting with my collection.
Walter neatly identifies the 'Achilles Heel' of persuading one's friends and loved ones that it's all a sound investment and much better than the bank! When I tell my wife how much I paid for something and how much it would bring if sold, she gives me that 'Paddington Bear look' and says "Sell it!".

This is why I maintain secret accounts and credit cards just for militaria and old motorbikes and have the related mail sent to another address. It's always a good policy to keep a few things hidden from women. No matter how much you love them etc etc, things can always go pear-shaped. I remember a stamp collector I knew - a really serious stamp collector - whose collection was seized by his wife's lawyers during divorce proceedings.

Remember, if they don't even know what you have, then they can't take it.

PK you are indeed a man of integrity if you tell your wife what you pay for your stuff! I tend to knock off a couple of noughts when the game is up. Better still if I'm expecting some goodies through the post,I get up early to open the front door to the postie wanting the signature!! If the bell rings and the missus hears...I've got some explaining to do. Cash deals are my prefered method with my little slush fund for "investments". That's why I tend to specialize in Foreign Volunteer shields. Anything found in my gaff with a swaz would instantly be de-nazified.All this subterfuge adds to the thrill of collecting I suppose...

I was left GBP4500 plus 17% commision poorer in the DNW auction.

I danced a jig when i called up the auction results of the Hunt DSO MC group and saw it had sold for 2600, thought I had picked it up cheap... it took 2-3 minutes before I saw it had sold for that price in 1995 and I had to shell out 4500 in 2003
