Letters in diamonds are specialists. The "X" was the Specialist X and included the "Not Elsewhere Classified" Specialty. During World War Two, this rating covered ratings like: Artist, Cartographer, Crystal Grinder, Fingerprint Expert, Intelligence Duty, Interpreter, Plastics Expert, Pigeon Trainer, Public Relations, etc. Based on this list - http://www.history.navy.mil/faqs/faq...tm#anchor17548 - there seem to be about 30 Sp(X) ratings.
This site has images of most WW2 Navy ratings, taken from the 1944 Bluejackets Manual: http://www.ussinaugural.com/crew/rat...ay/ratings.htm

He's a petty officer third class and a "Specialist (X)"
Specialist ratings were war-time ratings to denote that a man had some skills from his civilian background. "Specialist (X)" was a general category for those men not in other categories. "Specialist (X)" men could have been cartographers, pigeon-trainers, plastics experts, telephone switchboard operators, or men with journalism or radio broadcasting skills.
