This is probably way out of anyones range of knowledge, but has anyone ever heard of M.H. Herrin, a sketch artist who apparently did many early Time covers?
Here is an Origianl Sketch of Field marshall Jan Smuts, signed by artist and Smuts.

Is there a URL with Time covers?

There was an M. H. Herrin of New Orleans, Louisiana who was sort of a "local historian" who might also have done sketches. Does this look like his work?

And Bingo.... it is the original artwork for the 22nd of may 1944 edition.

So for $120 on Ebay Iget the original artwork to South Africas only Field marshall, Boer war fighter against the Brits, WW1 fighter against the germans in South west, and east Africa, member of Churchills war cabinet, South African prime minister....

Signed by him and the artist....

Okay, not of interest to anyone else... but I am a happy boy.

Yep, and my granny (SSGT at the time) was on one parade where Smuts was taking the salute....something about the UN as i remember.

That is an amazing piece, Chris! The vendor can't have known what he had! Bravo! I'm actually looking for a back issue of Time from June 26th 1944. Preferably in very good condition.

Try Ebay,i looked yesterday and was suprised by the tons of old Time magazines they had.
Just about everyone other than the Smuts one :-(
