          Hi Chris,

Sorry I can't really help but I think the Aussies still wear it as part of their dress uniform so it may be a bit hard to place a time on it.

              Dear Chris,
I'm assuming you mean a slouch hat?Otherwise known as KFF or Khaki Fur Felt.
Now i'm not an expert on these, but the only way I have been able to tell the difference, besides age and condition, are the type of eyelets used as ventilation, chinstrap holder's,sweatband and material sewn on the edge of the brim.
The differences are pretty hard to describe as the slouch hat's method of manufacture has remained remarkably consistent over the years,(and I say remarkable on purpose as uniforms and regulations for wear have become bland beyond description).
The best guide to a slouch hat,is not interestingly enough, the hat itself, but the putee(i'm sorry I can't for the life of me remember the correct name)worn around the hat itself. These went through many different forms of style, manufacture and materials. The colour patches-denoting batallion/battery/Div.etc, affixed to the side also went through different styles of manufacture(all were felt, but the manufacturing process gives them away).
Chinstraps also varied slightly by means of thickness, width and style of buckle.
I'm sorry if my response sounds a bit vague but there isn't really any way to point to specific differences without having examples or pictures to hand.
              Regards:Andrew

I would now have to assume after looking at that site as well as a lot of other Aussie militaria sites that my slouch hat is WW2 period. Thanks for the help everyone.
Now all I have to find is what the price on this would be(not that Im going to sell it or anything)
