French WW1 belt Buckle - ID Needed Plz

All I know is that this one was brought back by a British gunner in the Royal Artillery during WW1.

Can any of the French collectors on forum confirm that this is actually French and what unit wore this buckle?

It measures .....3.5 x 3.3 inches.

This is a Gendarmerie buckle. The French Army version (used only early in the war, replaced by a frame buckle) was without insignia.
