    Japanese helmet, NVA reissue?

I posted this in the Japanese section and received a couple PMs suggesting it might be either an NVA reissue of a Japanese helmet or a Chinese reissue supplied to North Vietnam. Your knowledgeable input apprecuated!

Its well known that Japanese Type 90 helmets were reissued after the war in various SE Asian nations, such as Thailand. This one was definitely repainted with the liner out, and the original liner was re-installed. Who did it, I cannot say.

I've not seen a Japanese reissue with ironclad provenance so I find it hard to be definitive on Andrew's helmet. I've also heard of them often throughout my years of collecting but never seen one or a period photo image showing one.

This helmet in my collection is close though I don't know what it is. I purchased it from Manion's in the late 1980's when I was just starting my collection. It has an early war capture doc but I've never been able to authenticate the doc or helmet with any degree of finality. The interesting feature is the symbol image impressed into the interior paint. It remains a "?" - opinions are welcomed.

603dasc: The interior of your helmet looks a lot like the Swedish M26 helmet. If I remember correctly the black painted ones were used by the Civil Defense. I picked up a "Japanese helmet" based a really crappy picture from Manions as well in the 1980s that was a black painted Swedish M26.

Thanks for the input - when I first bought it that is what I came u with as the closest match also so it is nice to have that reaffirmed. I often wondered if it was maybe a movie helmet, but that impression throws me off. I was hoping it would shed some light on Andrew's but I guess not.

              Yikes... "Manions."

Most stuff I bought there had "issues."

              Are they still around? Robert

I don't think they are still around - and I got some awesome items there that I still treasure. Better than some of the so called "honest" dealers that are out there today, systematically and deliberately fleecing collectors for years.

Shape is close to the Swedish but rivet and badge cut is different, liner is completely different. The liner is still probably the key to what it is?!

I believe the man in the back is wearing a Japanese helmet.

Thanks for this photo, really interesting! The first I've seen.

Yes, the fellow in the back is wearing a Japanese helmet....nice picture! That's why I think the helmet Andrew posted at the start of this thread may have been a Chinese rebuilt Japanese helmet sent to North Vietnam. The rebuilt Japanese helmets the Chinese used had a new liner which was similar to the original Japanese helmet but the chinstrap was different (more along the lines of the one in the AA crew picture) as well as having a badge on the front.

The original posted helmet looks like a post war rework by a collector to me. The paint is newer and the liner looks original. The silver rivet holding in the liner looks a lot like a reproduction German helmet liner rivet. If you look under the liner and bend the prongs of that rivet, you might see a makers mark looks like the repo D&C 1941 marked helmet rivets being sold all over ebay. Looks like a collector messed with original Japanese helmet.

It could be a lot of things, not the least of which is junk. But I really doubt it's anything a collector has put together.
