          1962

This particular contract was awarded during FY 1965, putting its manufacture in the 1964-65 range.

The only folks who wore them with just the crest were trainees in the 2nd phase of Training Group.
We wore ball caps in phase 1 until that ended and then the beret with crest until we finished phase 3 and became "S qualified."
At that point we went to one of the various groups and sewed on the "Full Flash."
That was the "SF Qualified" indicator in the days before the long tab.
Non qualified support guys, including legs, wore berets with the "quarter flash" or "candy bar."
At one time, guys already in group going through training group wore a quarter flash.
5th Group in VN made everyone wear the full flash.
It was part of a uniform agreement with the LLDB. We had to wear their shoulder patch on a pocket and officers had to wear ARVN rank pips on their shirt buttons.

I've got his 5th Group flash and he was also with 1st Group for a while based on his jump ovals. He started with the 101st and at some point transferred to SF.
