      Hi Larsen,

the LM number is the number that appears on the soldiers 'dogtag' ( and will be found enetred on various ID documents too).

This differs to the number on the rear of the wings which is a number showing the numerical order in which they were awarded.

Hi Larsen. Patrick is basically right, the Matricule and the Brevet No are two different things and not identical, although they might appear similar.

This is what I tried to explain... so if they have given you information about the number on the brevet and thought it was the Matricule - you got info about the wrong man...

        PS
(The number on the dogtags is not the Matricule either. It is a third number)

Thanks both of you for posting me answers.
Them i was looking for informations about the uniform, i send his description of his medals, his military rang and the number behind the Para wing. I got the name from the Legion Museum, Anton Heider.
The seller told me before i know the name that it was a German.

Great with the new informations. Thanks again.

I dont know if Aubagne has any chance of looking up a brevet number? I think other than Matricule and name on the cover of your file, all other info is hidden on the inside. Matricule and Brevet are chalk and cheese... and given the amount of Germans in the Legion at that time .... there is probably a 50/50 chance that it was a German...

The Dog tag number contains the Matricule, with a few digets more if I remember correctly.

Maybe the newer models, but definitely not the old dogtags from the 40s/50s.

Take a look at these for example:

                  Bonsoir,

That's depend when our friend wrote to Aubagne. Till 2004 or 2005, I don't remember well, the airborne school at Pau kept all the airborne qualified files in its archives. That was the good ol'days, it was so easy to give a name to a number. After, all the archives moved to the Military National Archives, and now it's near impossible to have an answer to any question. I spoke with one officer assigned there and he explained me how with so few people he must answer of the daily questions for pension attributions and other administrative asks. So, no time to waste with history enthusiasts!

                  Cheers

                  V

                  PS

Larsen, I don't forget you but I was not there these last months and i could not check the cadre roster.

I think you will find (on the more modern tag) that it is indeed there.

                      46 (year he joined)
                      92L
                      2252

                      Mine is
                      89 (year I joined)
                      137
775XX (last 5 digets of my Mle.)

So in the case of the Mle shown, i would think the 2252 are the last digets of his.

                        Hi Chris,

I have his Matricule - it has nothing to do with 2252. I looked up in a couple of Livrets from the 40´s/50´s. The "Numero de la Liste Matricule" is always mentioned on page 1 in the right corner at the bottom of the page. It is the same number as on the dog tags.

But it has nothing to do with the "real" Matricule...
(I am speaking only for these old Livrets and dog tags from the 40´s/50s)

                        Regards

                        PS:
                        @ Larsen
Your para brevet N° 54350 must have been awarded around Dec. 1950/January 1951. I have the diplome to N° 54107 wich was awarded 09.11.1950

                          Hi.

                          That is great to hear.

I have written to the Legion in hope to get more informations about him.
