nice photos and congrats to a good collection.

Is there a specific reason why someone (only GI's?) would place a pack of cigarettes and a Zippo onto their helmets?

thanks - I had that feeling - it's just that me having been to jungles and tropics quite often - cigaretts and also a Zippo won't work long due to humidity and cigaretts not wrapped in a plastic bag will start to become wet and moist anyway.

So I thought it's more like someone did it for whatever reason and it became somewhat of a fashion. - thanks again

Then you have your answer, why ask?

There's no doubt It became a fashion thing as evidenced by plastic spiders, playing cards etc etc, however It's unlikely It started that way.
