I looked to see if this had been previously covered, but I don't see it on any of the existing threads...
River Patrol Insignia of the United States Navy (Vietnam) 1966-1972 by Scott Kraska and Stephen Kirby.
I just had the opportunity to review this for ASMIC-PUBS, the on-line eBay store selling reference books on behalf of ASMIC.
The book has already gained a ton of praise and it is well deserved. As you would expect from an R James Bender published book, it is well bound with glossy paper, full of color photos of patches, uniforms, berets, beer can DI's, flags, weapons, etc. used by our Brown Water Navy.
The photos of the patches are either life size or close to it. You can see every stitch! The uniform photos are equally clear and detailed, and are of a museum archive quality.
The authors do a great job of showing the wide variety of insignia that were used during the war and attributing them to their various sources. Even if you do not collect PBR items, this book is worth having just to see the wide variety of cloth insignia. The book does a great job of blowing away the myth that in-country made insignia were poorly detailed.
Also included are sections on the SEAL teams that worked with the PBR's as well as the air support units HAL-3 and VAL-4. To top it off there are a number of period photos of both men and equipment.
The book is a bit pricey at $59.95, but books of this quality are rare and a sound investment for your collecting.
