Diem Period VNMC / VnN Slk Woven Cap Badge

Okay I just bought a small ARVN patch collection. I identified all but this one. It looks identical to a Diem period Vietnamese Marine Corps or Vietnamese Navy cap badge. Except it is a patch. Has anyone else ever seen this? I am always excited when I find a ARVN patch I haven't seen before.

    Wonderful !

I guess this is for the white navy hat. The versions with the two crossed anchors (1st model) and the one with the NCO anchor and 3 branches (3rd model) exist. So it must been worn the same way ?

NTS-Thanks. At first I thought that also, but the patch is over three inches tall. I believe on a average "dixie cup" style hat the brim isn't that tall. I also thought, and this is a super shot in the dark, maybe the headquarter's staff wore it as a shoulder patch. Like you, I think it is a great piece. Now we just need to nail down a id on it.

        diem patch

Bob, I've never seen this as a patch but it is the 2nd Madel Naval Officers Badge. In metal it is gold or brass. It was used only a few months before Diem was killed. Gary Murtha shows it in one of his books. It is rare in metal.

I don't collect these but I have many Bao Dai, Diem and Cao Dai vets as friends who help me.

          Diem insignia

2nd model I mean. VN officers didn't wear dixie cup caps

Joe, Thanks for the comment. I have both variations of this in metal, in my collection. But, this is the first time I have ever seen a Vietnamese silk woven version. Like I said earlier in the post, I think it is too tall to be worn on any type of headgear.

              Well, 3 inches is high...

An other idea leads me to national uniforms worn overseas. You can see "Vietnam" tabs but also often Air Force branch patch on the shoulder when the VNAF are going for some kind of training abroad. It much more commun than when they parade in VN.

              My two cents. Still digging.

That makes a lot of sense also.

Bob, I have just looked into my 1964 Hai Quan agenda and I have found this :

Unfortunately nothing about the uniforms themselves...

BTS, is that out of the early Officers book? The one the reprints are made of the 1971 issue?
Whichever it is cool to see it. I just pulled a US white Dixie cup hat and laid the patch on the brim for size. It fits but it takes up the whole area from the bottom seam to the rolled edge.
Again, I think it is totally cool to find a ARVN patch I hadn't run across before.
                    Thanks.

Francois, sorry just went and saw that I proof read everything else, except the name. Was going so fast I hit the B instead of the N, and there is a glitch that won't let me edit right now.

                        No problem Bob.

The book I refer to is a South Vietnamese printed / designed / written agenda. It was made for the year 1964.

                        Cover :

                        Boats :

                        Navigation tips :

Apart for the calendar pages, it is full of valuable information about the South Vietnamese Navy.

As you know, I really prefer to get back to Vietnamese documents, as there is to many mistakes in collector written books.

Unfortunately the back is written in Chinese... Maybe someone could translate it ? Thank you !

Nice perid paperwork indeed. That is a fabulous photograph to help the discussion.

                              Great find.
