    Vietnamese Made Laotian Visor Cap

One of my customers came in my shop yesterday to show me these two caps. The first is a Vn made, in fact made by Cheap Charlie, Laotian visor cap. The bullion work is amzing on this piece. Also the leather visor has got to be the heaviest and sturdiest I have ever encountered on a VN made cap.

Tailor label shot. He also said that he has the fringed Viet made shoulder boards that go with this.

This other cap has me scratching my head. Not sure if it is Laotian, Cambodian, Viet, or what? Super high quality. Gaberdine like cover, the bullion work is amazing. The chin strap is very French style with the brass rounded type buttons, holding it in place. The tailor shop tag is breath taking.

              Hi Bob

very interesting, it looks to me that the 2 visors are made for a french "Prefet" or civil administrator that wore uniform on special occasion.

If you google the word prefet you will either see them in white peaked or blue peaked cap.

The only problem is that i m not sure that a "prefet" existed in Indochina, i know they did in Algeria.

so this is not a final say, but maybe a hint.

              here modern Foto

sorry about the foto i m trying another one

maybe Laos who received partial independance 1950, had their own Admisnistrators and could have copied this sort of french style visor hat.

here a prefet in white peaked cap for coastal region, (prefet maritime) i know the Laos has no coast but who knows how they considered the mekong??

As you can seee the prefet hats are very heavy embroided arround the hatband

                      Bob,

the loud bang you just heard was the sound of my jaw hitting the floor...

                      What a unique cap.

                      Just incredible.

                      Thanks for posting the shots.

                      Patrick.

Ouch !!! It does hurt !!!

                        Very nice items.
Do you know more about the time it could have been worn? I would say very late 50's or very early 60's, but it is only a guess.
The second one reminds me about Cambodian style but...

No Alex, I don't know exactly what it is. My guess is that it could be late 50's or very early 60's.

Just noticed on the bullion band of the 2nd hat, that two of the pieces of bullion form some sort of mythical beast with red tongues. These are set right at the center of the front, below where the cap badge would go. The rest of the gold bullion are just designs.
