Ive seen very few that I can recall including in reference books and museums. I suspect the survival rate for these oil cloth items is extremely low.

To be honest - these things are a minefield. These caps were produced also after WWI and worn by the military and in recent years good reproductions have appeared. You really need to know your stuff when it comes to these caps.

I hate to rain on the parade, but the snap is post WW2. It has been common knowledge among Fallschirmjaeger collectors for decades that PRYM snaps did not have the word "Original" added until after 1945, and that paratrooper smocks and bandoleers with this snap on them are reproductions. A pre-1945 snap made by the PRYM company (which is still in business) has only the word PRYM across the top of the snap, and the size (such as 6H) across the bottom at the 6 o'clock position.

Maybe, they have been changed after 1945,most of the time they were in very bad condition,i replaced myself those from my Luftwaffe winter jacket.

Well, the female snap at least is post-1945 production from the PRYM factory. Exactly when PRYM added the word "original" to its snaps and went to the modern design seen on your cap is not known for certain, but it was definitely after May 1945. So at best, this hat has been "restored."

                          Good work!

I kept my mouth shut because I don't know anything about this cap. But, I was not fond of the markings. I always focus on markings and aging on items I know little about.

Interesting to see their fake Krätzchen. I have heard that some think those found in "the hoard" are fake, and that site presented great fakes, but which are not the same.

I certainly agree the snap is post-WWII. If there is one important task to master when collecting FJ helmets, smocks, trousers, and field gear....it is the snaps used before 1945.

Well this has been an interesting conversation. While I agree with Willi on the importance of judging the stamps, it is a slippery slope. Original stamps can still look sharp and fake stamps can be made to look old. It's a collectors nightmare now as fakers hone their craft. I believe items need to be judged as a whole, taking all things into consideration.

That being said, I am certain that there are genuine items out there that have been given a bad reputation and lost their value because something seems odd or has been replaced/repaired. Since no one wants to get stuck with a fake, sometimes we throw the baby out with the bathwater.

How old is this cap? we can't know for sure. Snap aside, I like the look of it. One thing is certain, as we get further away in time from the events we collect, the new becomes old and it becomes harder every decade to distinguish genuine from reproduction.

Maybe we should collect rocks. They are all old, cheap and easy to find.
