I don't collect these but as a casual observer, I have to say that
I like it. I like the silver fittings, I'm just not sure about the chin strap mounts.
Like I said, I don't collect these so this might be just a dumb question but the
spike has rings indicating that it was for an officer but wouldn't an officer's
helmet also have stars holding the base on instead of domes? -- Just asking.

            Hi Martin,

It looks like it is an enlisted man's helmet from a Pioneer battalion.

I think that the chinstrap side mount on the helmet is simply tarnished silver. They can get a yellowish patina on them with age that looks like it does in your photo.

The spike and neck of the spike are for an Officer. It may be original to the helmet, or someone may have added it, it is hard to say for certain.

The 2-kokardes appears to be the NCO style, and not officer kokardes. It is possible that the wearer of the helmet was a one year volunteer that wore the officer spike and officer pearl ring on the neck of the spike. Or I suppose that he could have been NCO rank.

It is a very nice looking helmet, congratulations!

            Best Regards,

            Alan
