      Firstly, may I say what a wonderful photograph this is! I suppose the best clue for dating it is the cap tally of the sailor to the right. I recall reading that 'kaiserliche Marine' was introduced early in WW1 as a generic wording to replace the previous ship or unit designations.

      As a buckle collector I am especially intrigued by the belt rigs these guys are wearing. They are obviously in some sort of landing gear. The Other Rank to the right is wearing the special belt introduced for torpedo and mine laying personnel in November 1911. The Deckoffizier on the left is wearing a thin leather sword belt, but regulations dated January 1911 introduced a silk moiré belt to replace the previously worn leather sword belts for all officers, navy officials and Deckoffiziere.

        Firstly, I want to thank you for your words concerning the quality of this photo and the interesting information you give us.

        Considering the elements that you brought, this photo would have been taken at the beginning of the War (1914 or 1915); if we consider the cap tally of the sailor and mainly the late use by the Deckoffizier of a belt model which has been replaced by regulations in 1911.
