I completely forgot I was watching 100+ year old footage, until I was reminded again at the end. Huge turn out from elderly to people in their 20s. I usually gauge my approval of a movie on if I would purchase a DVD copy or not, I will certainly purchase this on DVD when released

I finally got the opportunity to see the film. It’s very impressive and the wow factor goes off the charts when the 3D begins.

I wish they would make many more, naval warfare, air warfare, war on the eastern front, Italian front, from the Germans perspective, american perspective, etc, etc....

I was lucky the weather wasn't worse on Monday for my hour plus drive to see this awesome film.

The 3D aspect makes you feel like you are right there.

The scene panning the soldiers waiting in the sunken lane and the one guy especially looking terrified for good reason really stood out to me, as we found out at the end of the film they were about to attack the Germans. In Peter Jackson's explanation at the end of the film, he revisited the exact area showing us what it looks like today, and said that we were probably watching the last 30-minutes of the lives of these men, as most of them were killed in the subsequent attack.

I liked the scene where they were interrogating several German Prisoners around a table outside, and going through their personal belongings. It was interesting to see one captor giving a large photo back to one of the Germans, and stuffing it back into a pocket inside his open tunic.

I also didn't realize how many of the men had missing or horribly decayed teeth as seen in many of the images.

That mud must have been really awful!

I'd go see this film again in a hearbeat if it plays again on the big screen. I look forward to buying a DVD.

As a side note, I got to sit next to a collector whom I'd never met before, so that was fun. He collects the rifles of the various armies.

Alan, very interesting to hear your commentary on this epic experience. I also got to view it on Monday last in the Twin Cities, and I'm still processing it with my poor powers of analysis. Peter Jackson has told the story of these men amazingly in their own images and words, as well as all the word imagery I have yet found on the subject of the Western Front. Or, I should say his imagery and rendering of this tragedy visually confirmed the words from Seeger, Brooke, Sassoon, Remarque, Junger and a hundred others going around in my mind.

I would prefer to see it again on a home screen with dvd so it can be analyzed more easily. The theater special effects and enhancements provided emotional interferences to a distracting degree, as least for me. I'm still glad to have had the full theater experience, though.

This is something else for us to talk about when we see each other again.

I finally saw it Monday as well in Atlanta. The film was playing in both 3D and non 3D versions at approximately twelve theaters around town.

The GF and I attended a 4pm 3D showing and the theatre was fairly crowded. Film itself was very impressive - and a bit overwhelming. Jackson's pre and post film commentary added significantly to the experience.

I am rarely a fan of modern film but will definitely purchase the DVD when the Region 2 version is released.
