These are an essential reference for collectors of pre 1914 uniforms and headgear of the armies of the imperial german states, along with the Pietsch/Knötel/Collas series and the Atlas des deutschen Reichsheeres. From those three references, you will be able to find most (but not all) answers.

Thanks for replying to my question Sandro. Do these books, of which I know the existence but do not, with the exception of Knoetel, have in my library add a lot of knowledge to what has been published in the various books of Verlag Militaria - Krause and so on - which I all have?

Tom, yes, I'd say they do, but they are very different: both Pietsch books focus on regulations, the Atlas offers a good pictorial overview of uniforms of all branches.

I would like to acquire the Pietsch set. I do have the atlas, which requires some room to use, and the three volume " Uniformkunde Das Deutschen Heer" by Knotel, Pietsch, and Collas, which cost quite a bit back in the 80's.
The Didier Laine "L'Armee Allemand en 1914" is also quite useful, I believe.

I also like the reprint of the 1912 plates that cover the M1907 uniforms. Of course, Kraus's two volume set is indispensable.

Pietsch's two volumes only cover the Prussian army, so you need Das Deutsche Heer to round out the info on Saxony, Bavaria, Württemberg, etc.

I forgot to mention that the binding on the Laine book is very poor; I have already had mine rebound. This for a book that was $ 99.95 in the 1980's; the tag is still in my copy.

Chip is right about the areas coverd by each set of books, and I agree on Kraus for field gray.
And then there are the Marshall Daut videos, difficult to obtain, but an excellent reference in my view.

I have the VHS tapes, and I believe I tried once a long time ago to copy, but they are protected I believe, it recorded static if I remember right?

If anyone wants the 2 VHS set, I am probably going to sell mine as I collect mainly pickelhauben, and the videos are mainly uniforms. They are incredible videos to watch. They are extremely hard to find and if you do, very expensive.

I will be gone until Friday, but if interested drop me a PM and will respond when I get back.

I am unfamiliar with some of these other sources.

I wanted the Pietsch books because they have alot of text regarding the various uniforms of various units during various periods up to 1914. The main value for me are the drawings of various field gear items during those times.

I'm not "voice" of the forum , but fully agree with others - I have all mentioned above books plus many other ones
