Request any help I can get with this item. I'm not even sure I've got it in the right forum. Can anybody tell me the Country of origin? Original, or Reproduction? The wood handle looks to be two pieces. The wood measures about 19 1/8 inches, and 22 1/2 inches overall.

Hello Mate!

It should be austrian but was heavily used also by italians but...IMHO...this is a typical east country fake.....

1) Head in two pieces (I saw originals and all were one piece)
2) Recent rust patina on the head
3) Wooden seems artificially aged
4) usually they were all with an hole on the lower part with lace


This is an original genuine one recovered from a Leutnant during the war

Looks like a fairly new, non-period item to me but no expert on these items.

Hi Chuck,

The iron head with the seam reminds me of the ones that the late Eric Johanson used to salt onto the old Manion's auctions. He used to get someone to turn wooden handles for him to insert into the iron heads. The handles he had made for him looked different than the one on this example you've shown to us.
