I've been offered this feldmutze but I have concerns. The main concern is with the Kokanee which show almost no sign of rust and appear to have been touched up with white paint.

I would agree... the white rings on each cockade have been repainted. Otherwise; appears to be a very nice example.

Unfortunately, it's a total fake. There was no such cap with this color combination. The stamps are fake and I'm pretty sure the cockades are too. There are tons of fake caps on the market right now. Most of them are coming out of Europe. Please check here before wasting your money on a reproduction.

Thanks for that info Chip. I thought the BAVI stamp also looked odd, but didn't peg the entire cap to be a repo.

You have to be very careful these days. One used to be able to easily tell good markings from bad, but now fakers are lifting markings from good pieces and copying them exactly. They get most of their markings off of sites like this and other Internet sources. So, you have to look for other, more subtle things, then add all your observations together in order to make a decision.

I agree there are a lot of very good fakes on the market these days , this one is on Ebay now but i dont trust it at all i have seen these krätzchens on a Dutch auction house and most of them had the same Manufactur stamp and Bekleidungambt stamp.
