    Opinions on two canteens please

    Hi,

I just got these two aluminium canteens. Left the model 1907 with a strange cover. Right the version with cork. Both without stamps on the bottle.

Unit stamp on the model 1907 "JR 39". Could this be "Infanterie-Regiment 39"? There was only a "Füsilier-Regiment 39" in WWI which should be "FR 39"?!?

          Jens,

The dark coloured one on the left in the first image is probably a Reichswehr item, which might explain the IR39 stamp, if it was not added later.

Hi David, I didn't knew that the Reichswehr also stamped the stuff with unit markings. Could the other one also be Reichswehr?

              Jens,

From the images shown above it is hard to tell. It may be older, but it could also be a typical scout or early party organisation item from the late 1920s or early 1930s.

              /David

                Jens,

I agree with Frosch, the marking "JR 39" is not a typical pre-1918 stamp. The Reichwehr did mark equipment items. You see many WWI era items reissued with later unit markings and dates. The other canteen is a pre-1907 pattern, which I would identify as the model 1893.

Thanks Chip! Did the model 1893 had a chain instead of a leather strap to hold the plug?

                    Jens,

Yes, but the chain on yours looks like a replacement. It does not match the age of the other metal fittings.
