    FR80 Picklehaube Cover

Glenn's thread on his pickelhaube and M1916 helmet prompted me to dig out these old images of a pickelhaube cover in my own collection. Rather than hi-jack Glenn's original thread, I'll post them seperately here.

The cover was issued to a soldier in Fusilier Regt Nr 80 in 1912. Note the applied red unit numerals. These were changed to Green by an AKO in 1914, and supposedly abolished in 1915 -in reality red numbers soldiered on alongside the later green ones perhaps as late as 1916:

Close-up of the markings on the interior front edge -a Konstanz marker's stamp from 1912, and the size stamp of "58". Note also the attachment hooks:

The unit stamps on the interior rear of the cover -"FR80" plus another 1912 date stamp:

Finally, a shot of the helmet it's displayed on -a 1912 dated brass fittings Prussian other rank's line infantry pickelhaube, marked to the interior to IR 22. Not a rare item by any means, but complete with original cockades and strap, and in nice condition.

My collection is largelly packed away at the moment, awaiting the arrival of a better digital camera, but I will get round to taking better shots of these items sometime in the near future. In the meantime, I hope these were of some interest.

        All the best

        Paul.

Very nice item!!! The Füsilier-Regiment 80 was stationed just 30 km away from my home! The great grandfather of a friend served in it during WW1.

Great cover! I don't think I have ever seen a marked uberzug this large! I once had an officer's M 1910 waffenrock to FR 80 ....

Many thanks for the response -I think Helmut Weitze is currently offering the FR 80 tunic that used to be in Dave's collection, a very nice example indeed.

I'm camera-less at the moment, but do have some old shots of the pickelhaube on my PC. First the right-hand side:

And the left -notice the straight cut variation on the chinstrap attachments often found on brass-fitted picklehaubes:

Hi Paul, I have been away for a week and just seen these pictures. That is a lovely set-up you've got. I'm very impressed with the haube and the cover. Thanks for sharing!

                        Paul,

What a very nice set and extremely tough to find as a matched pair. I can count the examples I have seen over the years on one hand.
