Yes, it's a Kurrentschrift capital letter I which looks like an English J.

Did they use that forward slash in imperial weapons marking? I had thought that was primarily a post-war thing.

Hi Chip,

There's a few weapons marked with the forward slash shown in The Imperial German Regimental Marking by Jeff Noll which are identified as being an Imperial marking, but the vast majority of markings with the / are post war.

On a sword or bayonet it's normally easy enough to determine wartime or post war though as the / is often accompanied (although not always) by the 1920 property marking or other signs of weimar era rework such as slotted grip bolts, slotted press stud and/or bluing of the blade & hilt.

In this case it ain´t Kurrent. The J was used to avoid a mix-up with the letter I, which was used as the roman numeral "One"

That´s right. Normally the slash indicates the post-war-era.
The 5th company (II.Bataillon) was in Hannover

The unit marking follows the Reichswehr directive of 1922. It's a Weimar era marking.
