    RANK "PIPS" QUESTION

What, if any, difference is there between Imperial officer rank pips (stars) used on shoulder boards and those used post 1918? Also, what is the difference between gilt and silver pips?

    Bobby:

I looked at my officer boards and the loose pips I had laying around. I noted that the imperial pips didn't seem to be particularly consistant with size, shape or profile. Most were gilded brass, and a few were gilded steel or painted steel. Looking at some of the pictures on other TR forums I couldn't see any particular difference between the imperial and post-war brass pips. Silver pips were reserved to generals for both imperial and post war boards and they tend to be "frosted" and a bit larger. TR NCOs also had silver-plated or aluminium pips on their boards. Hopefully, someone out there can provide some further information and / or observations.

    Regards

    Dave

Here are a few imperial pips for comparison.
