    Thanks for all the input. I do think it is entirely period made based on stitching. I got it with a Civil War sword. The design on sides reminds me of Zouave units in the American Civil War. I was thinking the red braiding would be for artillery? I did read a lot of proud German/Americans fought in the Civil War, forming their own units, and some had very unusual uniforms. Just some thoughts I have had on the hat. Does anybody see the possibility?

      I think that's a little too early for this hat. I strongly feel it's from around 1900, give or take 10 years and likely not military. Still a cool looking hat.
