    Mystery M17 Helmet

    I believe it was last year someone posted a similar helmet for review, and possible explanation of the painted patch to the outside rear rim area. I also remember seeing another one of these many years ago. I don't recall reading an answer as to why, or what Unit may have done this. I'm posting mine to see if anyone may have come across additional information or possible photographs of this type helmet in the field. In hand, I'm convinced the paint is authentic to the period. It's a G62, with a production number of R1570.

                  that's a totally all original M17, including the white patch paint. why the white patch? all i can think of off the top of my head is that it was painted there for the rear troops to see the front ones in a night attack to follow them into battle. i know it's a stretch... what was i thinking???

                    Very nice helmet Chuck! I also agree that it's a sort of recognition mark for the other troops to see who's in front of them...

                        The austrian army used this kind of marking to help the artillery observers to recognize the positions reached by the troops during an attack.
                        I don't know if the german army used this system as well, but it's also possible that this helmet was used by the austrians, since the first helmet stocks used by the austro-hungarian army were german made.
