SEVERELY SHRAPNEL DAMAGED EARLY "SQUARE DIP"?? RELIC HELMET from ESTATE GROUP...

Here's an interesting battlefield relic in the form of what I "believe" is an early, so called "square-dip" M16....It's a very small helmet, apron stamped "ET 60", or at least that's what I can make out. I'm refraining from claiming it to be a "camouflage" helmet, although it does have what seems to be some sort of very old, whitish oxidation covering much of the surface. It has a large stress crack through the dome, as well as several ragged holes and one large chunk taken out of the apron...obviously, if this helmet was being worn when hit...well, you get the picture. This was amongst a small Great War US uniform group that I just acquired...have to assume it was a battlefield pick up. The original chinstrap bales are still hanging on, as is the VERY dry and broken thick leather liner band, as are all three rivets. The crack in the dome goes right through where one of the vent lugs was located, hence it went missing, I'd assume, at the time of impact. A pretty frightening reminder of what some of these items witnessed....Can anyone confirm for me based on the photos that this IS (or isn't), an early "square dip".....I know it can be a tough call w/ some of the smaller sized helmets. Pix below, and thanks in advance for any feedback.

As you mentioned it's tough to call on a size 60 helmet, but I think it has a chance.

100% square dip well, maybe a little less since it's missing in places

i think a square dip in any condition is a fine acquisition and it is a size 60, what a pleasant surprise this must be for you!

Thanks. Yes, it’s a first for me...Was surprised at the size as well. It must be the smallest size made, I’d assume....

What is the black stuff on the top of the helmet? Is it some kind of tape?

...I think it’s either a run of old roofing tar from being in an attic, or paint...doubtless this piece wasn’t stored with any particular regard to its well being over the years...
