Curious as to when the vent lugs were removed and why?

i like to think that there was a good reason for this but it will remain a mystery. judging from the patina around the holes i would say this was done quite some time ago. i've seen a few M16/18 with their air vent lugs removed but with no explanation as to why. your theories are welcome...

In the movie "All Quiet On The Western Front" when Himmelstoss is in the trench beside Paul the lug on the right side of the helmet Himmelstoss is wearing is missing

you're right, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOWFJEht0OA#t=1h2m28s

so this could be period removed or lost for whatever reason. or it could be a movie prop

anyway, does anyone know why this M16 is special? besides the missing air vent lugs...

I remember seeing an interviue with Lou Ayers, and he remarked that during the shooting of the movie the actors actually lived in the trenches and dugouts, they had to put up with rats and lice just like the real German soldiers did. The movie is as accurate as the real thing but without the actual deaths of the soldiers. They used period uniforms and accessories.

Next thing on my list is a good m16 steel pot. Really nice helmet mate.
