    I'm assuming that this box fits into some sort of bracket from the slots cut into the one end with the angled bottom cut off

      Some wooden boxes had the slant cut on the bottom and some did not. I just depended on what date they were made. WW1 vs WW2. The gun was mounted on various mounts (cradles), the slot gave a it a bit of extra clearance for it to move.

        I had thought that the slant cut was made so that the box fit into an ammo cart.
