    Fernglas 08 Binoculars

    I just picked up a very nice pair of WW1 Leitz Wetzler Fernglas 08 binoculars complete with case.

    I am unable to post any pictures at the moment, but they are similar to this pair;

    The eyepiece on my pair are a chocolate brown bakelite and the binoculars show very little use with well over 98% of the finish intact.
    The optics are clear and comes with a separate metal eye cover, but no straps.
    The eye cover maintains almost 100% of its' matt green finish.
    Other than the Maker (E.Leitz Wetzler) and Model (Fernglas 08) on the central disc, there is the serial number 88733.
    X.18 can also be found.

    The case is almost in unused condition with the base being a black pebbled material (ersatz leather?) with brown leather straps and fittings.
    One of the straps is marked E.Leitz Wetzler.

    I was wondering if anything further can be learned from the serial number 88733?

    Your help with this will be much appreciated.

    Hello,

    I doubt you will be able to research the serial number, but the "X 18" is October 1918, which probably explains the very nice condition. Most likely, they never made it into the field with the war ending in just weeks.
