I have seen verious references to "red", "poppy red", and "scarlet" when referring to Great War German uniform piping, shoulder strap piping, shoulder strap insignia, cap bands, etc. Does anyine know whether these were one and the same shade of red (in theory and/or in practice), or whether these were distinctly different?
I have to say, in colored photos I have seen of items like shoulder straps where apparently piping was stated as one (e.,g., scarlet), while regimental numbers or cyphers were specified as anothet (e.g., poppy red), I could not discern a difference. But, whether this was a variation in practice, or the shortcimings of color photography differentiating between similar shades, I have no idea.
