Early Christmas Present: Prussian Paymaster with field cover

Hello,

This one came in today. An uncleaned Prussian Paymaster helmet plus a DRP marked cloth field cover.

The family I bought this from lived in Germany in the 1950's and acquired it there.

Missing one officer star from the spike base. The silver fittings haven't been cleaned for decades, they have a heavy dark patina on them.

It's been a lucky year for me finding helmets from families.

This wonderful helmet is simply a work of art. The patina and highlights on the wappen, finial and chin scales match beautifully. And the smaller imperial eagle is so cool. Very desirable piece. Congratulations!

Excellent questions Harold, thanks for asking.

The miniature eagle on the front plate/wappen is One of the Indicators of the helmet being a Prussian Paymaster helmet. The silver color fittings on the helmet and the curved shape of the chin scales are also used in combination with that mini eagle on the front plate/wappen to indicate that the helmet is a Prussian Paymaster helmet. (As a side note: the Administrative/Beamte Officials in Prussia would also wear this same type miniature eagle on their front plate/wappen. However the color of the metal fittings on those Prussian Admistrative/Beamte helmets would be gold/gilt, and not silver as on this Prussian Paymaster helmet).

There are no markings inside of the interior to indicate the status of this helmet being a Prussian Paymaster haube. There normally would not be markings inside of an Officer rank helmet such as this to indicate any branch of service/unit or rank status. Officer helmets are different than enlisted issued helmets where we often times see the issue regiment name and/or number stamped on the underside of the rear visor. Officer helmets don't have those type of markings. Part of that reason is because they are private purchased helmets owned by the individual officer, and not issued by the regiment as were enlisted men rank helmets. Once in a while we see an officer helmet with a penciled in name inside a helmet, or occasionally a paper label with the officer's name is pasted inside a helmet shell.
