    Family heirloom - info and possibilty to restore?

    Hi all,

    I'm at a loss on this one. It apparently came back with the great grandfather (anzac) and was then used as a toy for dressing up etc. Now its in my hands and i'm interested to know a few things about it;

    - any info... i guess it is bavarian? But other than that no idea
    - the size looks very small... or is that normal?

    Regarding restoration;

    - is it possible?
    - what might it cost?
    - and if the answers to the above are positive any recomendation for a eu based restorer?

        Personally I would leave it alone... the cost to restore it would be very expensive. It is in a very sad state

          If the heirloom is in my family I spend the money; otherwise no.

            Of course it can be restored but it won't be easy. You would be well advised to look at some of the restoration threads on www.pickelhaubes.com to see what is possible and the great results that can be achieved.

              As a family heirloom I'd spend the money to get it back together.

              I wouldnt try to turn it into a museum piece, just enough so it can be displayed as a coherent piece for family and self.

                  You could Stitch the visors back on yourself the holes are already there
                  Then a good clean and it will look a hundred times better

                    Yes, I agree... Important to fit the loose visor into the metal trim before sewing the visor... Personally I'd sure 3 or 4 "points" to secure it properly rather the try sewing the entire visor back on.

                    I wouldn't clean or polish anything too much... I might restore the chin strap and Rosettes for display purposes I'd give the metal work a wipe with WD40 or similiar, and leather dye the bare spots as required. You need to keep it on a headstand or similiar.... or you'll be resewning annually... much worthy as a family heirloom from the Great War.
