Need help on ID'ing name & unit marking

picked up a somewhat faded M-16 camo helmet w/Rank/Name/Unit painted on skirt,,,can anyone help w/deciphering this or able to point me in the right direction for translation?,,,Many Thanks,,,Robert

That's not too difficult...

Gefr. is Gefreiter / PFC Private First Class

and 9/49 is the 9th Co. of Infantry (or maybe Field Artillery) Regiment 49

If Gefreiter Katz had been in the infantry he would have been in the 6th Pommeranian Inf. Regt. 49.

I looked on wikipedia on German Order of Battle 1914/1918 & all I could find was the 49th Mixed Landwehr Brigade of the 4th Army; there was no 49th Infantry/Artillery regiment listed in the rolls...could this be the unit?

I doubt it is from any mixed Landwehr Brigade and I am not sure why the I.R.49 could not be found, but I agree with Pauke that the helmet is most likely from the ninth company of that regiment.
