    Some epaulettes

    Hello,

I was offered these Epaulettes and I am now wondering what kind of Epaulettes they are and what would be a fair price to pay for them.
The seller says they are Saxon, but I would want to hear more.
    All the best,
    Daniel

These appear to be for enlisted ranks of the Saxon Garde Reiter Regiment.
    Quite scarce, if authentic.

      Thanks,
What would be a fair price to pay?

I believe the epaulettes in the picture have a red wool backing. If that is the case they belong to the Field Artillery Regiment No. 12 Reit Abth. I have not seen a pair up for sale so I would say they are rare. Hard to give you an exact price to pay. If the wool backing is in good condition a fair price might be $300.

I would definitely want a good picture of the reverse before I made a move to purchase these.

            Thanks,
So about 270 if in euros.
I assume they are pre 1914 and post 1871?
            Any more precise years possible?

            Best regards,
            Daniel

Something just didn't look right when I first saw these epaulettes from the front. The red around the edges looked uneven. Now that I have seen the reverse, I can say that I think the backing has been replaced. The padding should be firm, not lumpy and the edges of the material smooth and taut. That may also be the reason the backing is red and not blue. Perhaps the restorer did not have another original piece from this regiment to refer to. The majority of epaulettes do have a red backing, but not this regiment. I'm certainly no expert when it comes to epaulettes, as I don't even own a pair. Perhaps Tony will chime in, as he has a collection of them.

Well, not much I can add, they are FAR12. Fronts are identical to the Garde Reiter, but they have blue backings. Below are one of each. As Chip noted, they are quite loose and sloppy, this can happen if the horse hair inside gets wet and squished, so have a close look to convince yourself they are not restored. Easiest way is to look at the wool. Period wool is incredibly high quality and dense.
