    Pickelhaulbe from the owners family

Gentlemen, Yesterday I acquired this Pickelhalbe from a 75 year old German who emigrated to the US over 50 years ago. He indicated the helmet was his grandfathers and was from the Wurtemburg Regiment. He thought it was pre WWI? He stated the words on the front plate translate to Fearless and Loyal. Missing the chinstrap but, given its age, the leather is in great condition. It has been in the family for 100 years!.

I don't see any maker marks or year of manufacture. Any comments or help would be greatly appreciated. thanks Rich

        Hello,

You have a nice looking Wurttemburg Eigetumsstück (Private Purchase) Helmet for an enlisted man. The round domed retainers for the spike base (enlisted man), the enlisted style spike with no rings on the spike (even though it is a tall spike), M91 side posts for chinstrap or chin scales (enlisted man), and the unlined undersides of the front and back visors are all indicative of an Eigetumsstück (Private Purchase) enlisted man's helmet.

Since the back spine has no ventilator, I believe this helmet is not an infantry helmet, but instead for the 13th Train Batallion, which was Wurttemburg's only Train Batallion, and it would take curved brass chin scales.

I wonder what the extra leather applied over the central interior of the helmet shell is hiding? It is not normal to have that inside the helmet. Maybe it is hiding old repairs/damage?

Here's a link for a similar Bavarian version, although it is for Infantry, which is also an Eigetumsstück (Private Purchase) helmet: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=708195

        Best Regards,

        Alan

Nice one, considering it's 100 years old. The missing parts can be found when you do some searching and patience will be rewarded at the end...

In my humble opinion, it's not necessary for a train batallion because private purchase helmets don't always have the air vent thingie while the issued do have them...

I also don't see why the extra leather pieces are at the inside of the dome... We can only guess...

Nice 'haube. Too bad it's not with the original family still, but at least the story is still with it.
