Mid-war there were Sturmtruppen who wore the silhouette of a hand grenade on their left sleeve and this would appear to be what you have. In photos they look like cut out images as opposed to thread embroidery. Some one will most likey "Chip" in with more information.Comment

I'm no expert on these. But, I always thought they were a black silhouette on field-gray. However, I've also heard of field made badges. So, this could be one of those.
According to the stamp in his pass, he was in the Freikorps unit, Sturm-Batl Pfeffer, which had a sleeve badge that was a rearing Westphalian horse. However, it's possible that some added some extra bling with a badge like this. It does look home-made.

I've seen similar insignia in period photos, but as bolewts58 says, it's normally a black cut-out shape on a field gray backing. This one appears to have been sewn to something. Is that correct? The wool backing is very shoddy looking.
I would at least give it a black-light test. There is no end to the variations of unofficial insignia and I would think during the immediate postwar era, there would have been a better chance of a field made patch being produced.
