          ?

Which monogram?, these stoneware ones dont normally have a lithopaine on the bottom, Ill add a better picture of the makers mark.

I'm definitely not the duty expert when it comes to these steins Noe, but I was under the impression that all originals have a lithophane. I'll be interested in what the experts in this field have to say.

I was lucky enough to pick one up a few weeks ago myself.

                  stein

Im no expert but i think the one you pictured is a early reproduction, i was always under the understanding that period ones never had nudes on the bottom, Again no expert would love to here more. Thank you for your help!

Interesting. I didn't mean to hijack your thread Noe. I'll open one on mine tomorrow. Below is an excerpt from one reference. I know they were reproduced in the 50's, but believe they did exist. You got my curiosity up on both of them now.

(Interestingly, beer steins were always considered “family-type” items — hence risqué or indecent lithophanes are exceedingly rare [in old steins]. Even the socially acceptable artistic female nude is only very rarely encountered. Hence we might say that beer steins, especially character steins, could be rated “PG”.)

                      thanks

Im no expert on these either, sometimes i find out information that someone told me years ago was total BS and i always believed it LOL, for instance my dad always told me it was bat meat that was in a can of Baked Beans and i took that as gospel truth for about 20 years LOL im always up for learning something new, that's whats so great about this forum.

The stein shown in post numbers 1 to 3 is a nice original for service in 2 Imperial German Military Railway units over the period of 1908 to 1910. These are not easy to find but they turn up every now and then. Very nice.

The other stein shown in post numbers 6 to 8 is a reproduction made after WW2. It is hard to know who, where and when these reproductions were made. The nude lithopane was popular with USA servicemen stationed in Germany in the 1950's & 60's. However those steins were for USA units stationed in Germany during "The Cold war" Most steins made for Imperial German units after 1945 are simple reproductions with made up fictional names. The odd one was sometimes ordered by WW1 German veterans (in rare cases only) during the 1950's-60's but never with a nude lithopane,

                        Chris

                              Hi Noel,

Very nice stein, and hard to find for an Eisenbahn unit, congratulations!

Any chance we could see the hallmark/maker mark on the bottom side of your stein?

Looks like Chuck's stein is a repro, made sometime after WW2, as mentioned already by Chris. I made the same mistake with a similar one a number of years back.

                              Best Regards,

                              Alan
