    Pickelhaube cloth cover

    Hi: Can anyone tell me what kind of material was used to stiffen the front flap on a field grey cloth Pickelhaube cover (the part used to help fold over the front visor of the Pickelhaube). I just purchased a cover and the front fold-over flap is torn in the center exposing a green plastic-type material....but I don't think plastic was invented prior to WW1. Please let me know.

      Hello,

      That is what is supposed to be there. Plastic was around in WWI and had been patented since the 1850's. The most common type was Bakelite (invented in 1907), but there were others.

        Thanks ...

        Thanks for the note. Does the rest of the cover look OK? (authentic)?? I understand that 'DRP' was most commonly found on private purchase covers.

          Hello.

          No problem for me with this officer pickelhaube cover.

          DRP = Deutsche Reich Patent.

          Best regards

              I would also say it's totally correct private purchase / officer cover .
              This plastic seems to be celluloid which is older then mentioned by colleague Chip Bakelite and still younger the first used Ebonite ( patented in 1850 or close to ) . Celluloid was in use since 1870 and was much more playable then ebonite , easy to color and form ( by around 90 Celsius ) . For example many period officers' , NCO's and parade swords handles are covered with it since then up to 1930's ( of course excluding those with lizard's , ray's or any other natural skin ).
              ... so some plastic aren't so young as we thing
              with regards
