I think in the least the bare metal with lack of Patina needs an explanation.

The paint loss could be relatively recent. The original seller using a rag to clean it up a bit before selling rubbing already loose paint off or even a sudden change from hot to cold could cause loose paint to flake. I had a very nice unit marked US WWI helmet the seller decided needed a good scrubbing before sending it to me with the net result about 50% of the painted insignia flaking off and the color underneath that paint not matching the either the exposed bare metal or original base coat of paint as it wasn't exposed to the same conditions for 80+ years.

Thanks for all the help. But really thanks for all your time and knowledge on these helmets. I think the paint chips are from dry storage here in Florida, the swings in the weather every year made the paint chip off over 80 years or more. Just my guess.

Looks fine too me. Sometimes looking at things "too" closely is as bad as not looking closely enough.

I suppose that is plausible, now if you could only explain the contrails in 106 degree heat

It's not 106 degrees five miles up

It's not 50 below on a 106 day of summer heat at 5,000 feet up either. Anyway I have something I will send you via email. From time to time someone brings up a topic we are not even allowed to discuss here.

                      Helmet

What are contrails? What do contrails have anything to do with a German helmet?Munster left some contrails on my toilet and the floor yesterday.

He also told me it is something sprayed from airplanes by the lizard people, but only special people know of these activities by the lizard people guardians of the Anunakie Solar Realm.

They have nothing to do with this topic and they come up from time to time because people are still butt hurt from discussions on the General Discussion forum I am banned on. That's how butt hurt people got, they had to ban me.

Don't bring up the topic and I won't post a two page write up with irrefutable eye witness account I have. For some reason people like to snipe at the issue from time to time. I find it amusing. It's ok to do so long as you can ridicule someone but get into heavy debate and facts start coming out then oh buy gotta ban or lock a topic.

Don't open the can of worse unless you want to eat them, that goes for anyone.
