...My best guess would be a custom / privately made piece for a specific individuals rifle or musket, perhaps even for hunting purposes. It looks a bit too refined to be any sort of mass-produced piece for any particular army in my humble opinion. Neat piece, though! Is the "socket" end half-round or rectangular in configuration? Also, no fuller in the blade on either side?
