Ebay seller using book to sell helmet

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-Turkish...21417165349%26

I don't know about what he says in the listing, anyone got an opinions on this?

They are documented. They did exist. The modification was said to be done to accomodate them being worn during prayer (debateable).
I have seen a photograph of one being worn by a Freikorps member.
All that said, in my opinion, this one is not original to the period.

I thought so too and think the seller is being clever with that book information. He is sure to sucker someone. I have talked to Ebay collectors and found some of them to be clueless.

I must say, I'm far from being a helmet expert but this sure was good. It's a Monday and I needed a laugh!

Even with the alteration the mans forehead still wouldn't touch the ground, the helmet would still have to be removed..... a thought just popped into my head.... wouldn't the time to attack them would be at prayer time when they all would be on their knees and head down???

I trust that your comment was not directed to the content of my posting.

The image of which I spoke can be viewed here:-

You will note the helmet in wear in some of the images.

To repeat - they did exist; they are documented but, in my opinion, the one offered on Ebay is NOT of the period.

of course not! i never quoted you in my post, but regardless, i would never use that kind of language to refer to anyone's comment. i know about these helmets being real, but the one in the auction is "pure garbage"

Thank you for clarifying the matter.

I'm not given to using such robust descriptives. For me it is simply "not of the period". Someone 'out there' may want it as a lampshade, in which case it would have some practical use.

I know M18 visor less helmets existed, I had no idea about M16's that were converted. The photos don't show wether or not the free core members are wearing M18's or converted M16's.

I don't see any valid rational for conversions since they were for Turkey and the Germans either had enough of the original lot or had no need to convert any additional helmets.
