    Felmutze pics needed

Does anyone have any pics of a ww1 feldmutze that has red piping and black banding . I just want to do some research and see what is a fake feldmutze and what is real?

Well I can't post photos and it's been a while since I owned any feldmutze, but I will give you some tips on spotting fakes. First, the lining in the issue cap was hand sewn to the wool body. You can find private purchase versions with the lining machine sewn, but those will not have issue stamps.

Next, since so many of these were taken as souvenirs, and they are still coming out of attics and trunks...they can be found from poor to almost mint condition. A mint condition original will be extremely hard to differentiate from an excellent and correct reproduction. Here it is important to focus on the stamps inside. How faded or strong the ink remains, the lettering shape and configuration.

It takes a lot of time and experience to figure this stuff out. That's why these forums are so great submitting photos and for getting opinions.

Last, to your specific color....caps with red piping and a black band (technical and artillery) usually are found with piping also above and below the band, however, there are a few documented originals with only the piping on the crown and with an unpiped black band.

Not sure who used these but I think they may be a variation used by some aviation ground crews.

You chaps correct me if I'm wrong on any of this info....I have been out of this field for a while.
