From the thread and material and only looking at pictures indeed unworn private officer, I was checking out a few last friday morning not scarce btw as you know my friend.

Private purchase covers could be purchased by anyone, though you are more likely to see them on officer's helmets. It was not totally uncommon for enlisted personnel to purchase a nice helmet with their own money.
