Good news Fred, that's a M15 strap and it never had a tongue. This unit wasn't formed until April of 1917. The model 1907 straps with tongues had not be made since 1915.

im bringing this post back from the dead, my great grandfather was in the

4th Infanterie Regiment King Wilhelm von Wurttemberg 12th Kompanie. He left germany for the US right before the war started. Would he have worn one of these pickelhaube with the lion and deer? You can see him in his bandsman uniform. He played the drum.

sorry for the poor quality of the color photo, i took it with my phone through the glass on a large original frame photo that my great grandfather brought with him in his trunk to the us. Its probably 20x14 inches or so in size
the 4 on the shoulders is very different from what i am used to seeing

Kevin,

Your great grandfather was in the 4.Bavarian Infantry Regiment. Nothing to do with Württemberg other than the fact that the honorary regimental chief was the king. Your relative would have worn a Bavarian Pickelhaube.

I have only recently found this thread, which I missed when it was new a few years ago. It started as Ulm specific but has migrated to other parts of the old Germanic Kingdom. My wife's uncle served in J. R. 180 from Tübingen during the last 2 years of WW-1. Here are the only wartime photos we have of him, in additional posts.

Her are two more of Fritz taken in 1918, one with his sister. In the closeup of the early photo it is possible of see the R.180 shoulder strap. The photos in the Bluse have the straps covered and it looks like he is wearing an Einheitsmütze, but that's only a guess.

Family lore has him in the 2nd Komp., R-180, M.G. section. If there is any interest I can provide more history.

Some of my wurttemberg items. A belt and buckle set and ammo pouch to the 120th. Belt is from Ulm and the ammo pouch Stuttgart. Some bayos, frogs are Stuttgart 1915 one is marked 12?.
