    Imperial German proof marks?

    Hello everyone,
I posted a pistol in the firearms section. I believe its an M87 revolver. From what I am told, these were a Nagant design and made by several different countries. It is odd, as it has no serial number but has several proof marks on it. The proof marks are a crown with a "C" underneath it. One of the other members suggested it may be an Imperial German proof mark. Can anyone confirm if this is correct? Here is the picture and the link to the thread. Thanks for any help!

    Hello,

The proof mark appears to be a crown over oval with the letter "C".

Here's a neat article on this weapon:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nagant_M1895

Known manufacturers: Russia, Belgium, Norway & Sweden (http://www.pmulcahy.com/revolvers/swedish_revolvers.htm), Poland & Greece. (Imperial Germany not listed as a manufacturer/contrated party for the weapon). Other countries apparently made "knock-offs": http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...6#post12167516

    Arsenal markings:

    http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinRareNagant.htm

    http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinMarks01.htm

http://www.russianrevolvers.com/nagant_belg.html ("The Crowned Oval is a Russian final black powder proof.")

And the history of this weapon:

    http://russianrevolvers.com/ImperialVariations.html

There are a very large number of Russian variations which could have employed a Crown Oval "C" as a powder proof (black or smokeless).

A better photo of the proof mark would be very helpful. Is it an "AC" mark by chance?

      http://www.russianrevolvers.com/nagant_belg.html

"The Imperial Contract cylinders are proof marked on the rear face with a Crowned Oval with the letters E L G in it and the Star 'B' inspectors mark. The Crowned Oval is a final black powder proof. Most, but not all, commercial Nagants are proofed on the outside surface of the cylinder between the flutes. The Imperial Contract revolvers also have the serial of the revolver on the front face of the cylinder, a practice that would continue with Russian production. No commercial revolver has been observed with a full serial number on the front cylinder face. Note that this is the only instance of the Star over 'B' without the Perron tower proof."

The proof mark is hard to photograph, so I drew a picture of what they look like. Any guesses?? Thanks
