Found this interesting buckle at a small show, but am not sure what was done and why? Obviously the center has been replaced and it does not have the standard catch and prongs. Any thoughts as to why it is so not textbook, and why such a repair would have been done with an oversized center?

The large roundel is typical for these early buckles the solder 'sweat' probably happened when someone attached the pin, the original keeper has been filed down, looks like a modern attempted repair to me they used a piece of the broken keeper, personally I think the roundel was always with this buckle.
